This project involved designing a mural to be placed in Olde Town Altoona, Iowa. Serving as a vibrant tribute to the heart and spirit of the town, it encapsulates the essence of its rich history, community, and natural beauty. The designs reflect a celebration of the town’s unique blend of small-town charm and evolving modernity, inviting visitors to pause, reflect, and appreciate what makes Altoona special.
The "A" shows the town's historical ties to railroads and trains, and even pays homage to the famous train wreck that occurred in Altoona in 1877.
The "L" shows the iconic lampposts around Olde Town, and how they are notorious for holding beautiful flowers. On top of this, the roses are a tribute to the rose gardens in Hanes Park.
The "T" shows Burget Mill, Altoona's oldest family-owned business. The cow represents what the business does, and has been doing for over 125 years— mill corn and make feed for poultry, cattle, horses, and other animals.
The "OO" shows the rich agricultural history of Altoona, with a biker riding through the beautiful bike trails. The plane in the sky represents Altoona having the first municipal airport and airline hangar in Iowa. The roller coaster not only shows the notable Altoona landmark, Adventureland, but is also where the municipal airport was located.
The "N" shows the Altoona Area Historical Museum building, but with a different title: Porter Hardware. This is a nod to the history of the building itself, previously being a Porter Hardware store.
The "A" showcases the beautiful sunsets that can be seen from Altoona, as well as the hot air balloons, which are a nod to the National Balloon Classic in Iowa.
The water tower is a notorious mark for Altoona, and can be seen throughout the entire town.
